Claude Fable 5.1 vs GPT-6 Astra: Which Should You Try for Coding?

On the saved public coding evidence, Fable 5.1 is the stronger first trial. GPT-6 Astra remains a top-tier candidate. ModelRank’s 121 versus 112 does not establish that Fable will finish 9% more projects for you.

A team with a dependable Codex workflow should care about the repair time a switch saves. An index gap cannot supply that number.

Start with the model measurements

This article uses the September 7, 2026 snapshot. Fable’s configuration is Adaptive Reasoning, Max Effort, Default Fallback. GPT-6 Astra is tested at max effort.

Fable is higher on both measurements, with a larger gap on SciCode. ModelRank divides each measurement by DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731’s corresponding result, takes an equal-weight geometric mean and multiplies by 100. The displayed integers describe that limited combination.

Your framework, repository, tool permissions and review time are not in the formula. S+ and S are editorial assessments, not two statistically established populations.

Why another AA page shows 70 and 67

Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index v1.4 compares Claude Code + Fable 5.1 with Codex + GPT-6 Astra. The saved original entries are approximately 70 and 67.

The evaluated object has changed. The model, agent harness and configuration participate together. A 70 from that index cannot be compared with ModelRank’s 121, or substituted for a model-page measurement above.

A higher aggregate also does not establish a win on every subtask. Model measurements help identify capable candidates. Agent-system measurements are more relevant when choosing a toolchain. Both are useful when the comparison keeps its object clear.

Equal token quotes can produce different bills

The September 6 OpenRouter quotes saved by ModelRank list both models at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. A hypothetical 100,000 input plus 20,000 output tokens costs $2 for either.

That is a channel token quote. It does not establish equal subscriptions, equal tool fees or equal cost per issue. Run length, caching, reasoning output and failed attempts change the bill. The official GPT-6 documentation returned HTTP 403 during this review, so the channel quote is not presented as a verified OpenAI standard tariff.

Fable could cost less if it completes your task in fewer rounds. GPT-6 could be more productive in a better-tuned Codex setup. We do not have paired project logs that establish either outcome for your workflow.

Who should try Fable first?

A new workflow focused on coding capability: try Fable 5.1 first. The saved measurements support that starting point. Use a difficult task that normally needs repair, rather than judging a simple page by its first screenshot.

A team already relying on Codex: keep GPT-6 in place while running paired checks. Match starting commits and acceptance criteria, retain the complete changes and count the work needed to change toolchains.

Mostly small, bounded edits: check whether either model’s price level is necessary. The Flash coding guide covers candidates with lower recorded quotes. Capability tiers and purchasing priorities answer different questions.

For a first comparison, replay a real issue that previously took more than half an hour. Use the same pre-fix commit and budget. Check behavior, test quality and edit scope, then record human review time. One run finds problems; repeated comparable runs are needed for a stronger conclusion.
